Role of the Appropriate Adult at The Police Station – NEW

During this training session, we will cover what it means when someone is taken to the police station, as a volunteer or arrested, and what the process is. The training will consider the role of the Appropriate Adult at the police station and who would be entitled to an Appropriate Adult.

The session will consider issues such as confidentiality, comments made to officers and how to raise concerns. It will also look at the legal, ethical, and practical role of the Appropriate Adult at the police station and mistakes that could be made.

During this session, you will:

  • Receive an overview of what happens at the police station when someone attends as a volunteer or under arrest, from different perspectives – suspect, police officer and solicitor
  • Understand the legal, ethical, and practical role of the Appropriate Adult at the police station
  • Understand the four ways a person may be contacted to be an Appropriate Adult
  • Understand who can and cannot be an Appropriate Adult
  • Explore issues which may arise being an Appropriate Adult for a suspect, including issues around confidentiality, comments made to the suspect or police officer in and outside the police station, and whether, and how, to raise concerns about treatment of the suspect
  • Identify common mistakes made by Appropriate Adults inside and outside the police interview
  • Consider effective strategies to meet the general welfare and other needs of a suspect by the Appropriate Adult
